On Monday, 24 November, as part of the activities marking 25N – the International Day for the Elimination of Gender-Based ViolenceDones Mentores conducted an awareness session on gender-based violence at Unilever, Viladecans.

The session, led by Lores López, director of Dones Mentores, provided a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the magnitude of gender-based violence: from its enormous economic impact to the extremely high number of cases worldwide. Data from the OECD show that one in three women across its 38 member countries experiences gender-based violence.

Among the reflections made, one key insight related to gender and health stood out: several studies show that patients treated by female doctors have a 5% lower probability of dying, a difference linked to skills such as active listening, person-centred communication and rigorous adherence to protocols. These are learned competencies, not innate traits, offering a revealing perspective on gender inequalities.

Building on these realities, the session also explored existing laws, challenges and initiatives aimed at preventing, eliminating and repairing gender-based violence. Within this framework, we shared our model of support for women exiting violent situations through gender-sensitive social mentoring: an approach based on horizontal relationships that helps women reconnect with life, with their personal projects and with their own agency. This work is always carried out in coordination with specialised services to ensure comprehensive and tailored support.

It was a highly enriching session, marked by active participation and valuable insights. We deeply appreciate Unilever’s trust and its commitment to raising awareness and combating gender-based violence. Initiatives like this help create safer, fairer and more conscious workplace environments.
