On November 14 and December 3, we had the opportunity to deliver two training sessions to the professionals at Portes Violetes, as well as other CCOO members interested in deepening their understanding of initial support for women experiencing gender-based violence. Portes Violetes is a welcoming and accessible service that enables any woman to take the first step in seeking help within a safe environment. For this reason, it is essential that its staff have strong tools to detect, listen, and guide women with both sensitivity and sound judgment.
The training, led by Lores López (jurist), Dana Machado (social worker), and Paula Bonelli (psychologist), provided an interdisciplinary approach structured around three key dimensions.
From a legal perspective, we reviewed the current legal framework—national, regional, and international—along with the most recent updates. We also explored some conceptual distinctions an reflect on the extent to which the law can act in countercultural ways.
From a social perspective, gender-based violence was examined as a human rights violation manifesting in multiple areas and forms. We worked on understanding the cycle of violence, challenges in detection, risk and protective factors, and obstacles women may face when seeking help. Emphasis was placed on respecting each woman’s pace, as well as on the importance of both remediation and prevention in intervention processes. The value of an intersectional approach was highlighted, and available resources and services for support and potential referrals were shared.
Finally, from a psychological perspective, we explored the effects of violence on women and the key elements for establishing initial contact in a way that creates a safe space: active listening, validation, organizing information, and providing clear guidance on possible next steps. The importance of always leaving the door open and also recognizing the emotional impact this work can have on professionals was underscored, highlighting the value of self-care and reflective practice.
Both sessions were highly enriching and fostered valuable participation, questions, and experience-sharing. We sincerely thank the professionals and CCOO for their engagement and commitment to continually strengthening the support provided through Portes Violetes.
